There will come a time when we decide to no longer live life with the goal of appeasing others. When the time comes, we will no longer avoid confrontation because we know who we are and we choose to think, speak, and behave congruently with our best-self.
As we transform into our best-self, people will take notice and behave differently. Some might admire the change implemented and compliment you on your approach. Others will respond negatively because you no longer fit the image they have of you. Paulo Coelho’s, “The Alchemist”, can explain why this happens. In his work, he says that as a person begins to live out their “Personal Legend” (one’s true calling) they will be tested. As they come closer to their “Personal Legend” the tests become increasingly more difficult.
As you begin to live out your “Personal Legend”, there will be others who look to slow your progress. Seeing you live courageously is terrifying to them for two reasons: they seek to protect you from disappointment or they are envious. The ones looking to protect us are often those close to us, such as family or friends. They have tried to live out their own “Personal Legends” but settled somewhere along the way. They seek to protect you from the grief and angst they hold on to. The rest look to cope with their grief and angst by doing their best to prevent others from succeeding. These people can’t bear to see other people live out their “Personal Legends” because it only reminds them of their own pain and suffering.
When we live in congruence with our best-self we must continually remind ourselves that the opinions of others are only worth the meaning we give them. If we truly want to live in congruence, we must realize that it is impossible to please everyone. There are too many people on this earth with a multitude of different beliefs to please them all - you’re fighting a losing battle. Take control of your happiness and choose to live a Life of Fortitude⚜️ that is congruent with your values. You set the standard for what behavior is acceptable and therefore, know the benchmark for joy.
